Biography

Prof. Ryszard Kowalczyk is a Full Professor of Intelligent Systems, and Head of the Intelligent Agent Technology (IAT) and Smart Energy Management (EMRC) research in the School of Software and Electrical Engineering (SSEE), Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology (FSET), Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia. He has over 20 years of combined academic and industrial R&D experience in Intelligent Systems and their applications in a wide range of complex real-world problems. Prof. Kowalczyk has been the Founding Director of the Centre for Intelligent Agents and Multi-Agent Systems (CIAMAS) (predecessor of IAT Group). During 2006-2010 he was Founding Director of a large Swinburne University Centre for IT Research (CITR) (and its successor Swinburne University Centre for Complex Software Systems and Services (CS3)). Prior to joining the University in 2003, he worked with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and a number of corporate R&D centres of multinational companies in Australia and overseas. He received M.Eng. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Zielona Gora, Poland in 1986 and the Silesian University of Technology, Poland in 1990, respectively. He is also with Polish Academy of Sciences and holds a lifetime title of Professor in Poland awarded by the President of Poland.

Prof. Kowalczyk’s research interests include intelligent systems, agent technology and collective intelligence, and their applications in building and managing open, large-scale, distributed systems such as web/grid/cloud/IoT service-oriented systems and intelligent infrastructure involving cyber-physical-social eco-systems (smart electricity grid, smart cloud and XaaS everything as as service). He has co-authored 4 patents and more than 200 articles in international journals and fully refereed conference proceedings, chaired and organized more than 40 international conferences and workshops, and been involved in the steering and program committees of some 120 conferences. Prof. Kowalczyk is Co-Editor-in-Chief of Transactions on Computational Collective Intelligence (Springer), has served on a number of Editorial Boards of international journals including the Journal of Algorithms in Cognition, Informatics and Logic (Elsevier), the International Journal on Multi-agent and Grid Systems, the International Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, the International Transactions on Systems Science and Applications; referee for Imperial College Press; and Advisory Boards of international technical committees including IEEE SMC and IEEE FIPA WGs. He is a founding member of Steering Committee of the Service Science Society (Australia), a member of Advisory Board of the Centre for Intelligent Information Technologies (CETINIA) at University Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid (Spain), and has provided an expert policy advice to the government bodies in Australia and overseas. Prof. Kowalczyk He has been awarded and successfully led more than 30 R&D projects funded by competitive grants and industry in excess of $21 million, delivering significant research and commercial benefits; for example in two projects his industry partners reported benefits of $50 million. His current and past industry collaborators include Suncorp, AARNet, Segura, Zimbani, Siemens, Telstra, Vastpark, DSTO, Canon, IBM, Australian Navy, SAP and DaimlerChrysler. He has jointly developed and led large international collaboration projects including EU-FP6 Integrated Project on Adaptive Services Grids, and the largest Federal Government (DEST-ISL) funded project in agent-based service oriented computing in Australia, which was one of the largest single university led projects in that area internationally. He has been instrumental in establishing a Public-Private Partnership in Smart Energy Management Research (EMRC) at Swinburne, led development and commercialisation of Smart Cloud Broker technology, and more recently led Swinburne’s engagement in establishing a National Institute of Science and Technology on Smart Industry, supported by the Brazilian National Research Council.     • Smart Industry - international collaboration supported by the Brazilian National Research Council involving 12 Brazilian universities, 14 companies and 8 international universities from the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and Australia.
